Hello and welcome to this episode of the worship bamboo or podcast where we are working with you to lay the foundations for skillful worship. I'm Eric Roberts and I'm joined by my lovely cohost and quote boat captain Emily Roberts. I don't have quotes for this one. I'll just have to take our word for it. Oh, well the last episode was full of quotes and it was amazing. It was about planning ahead. That was a fun one. Yeah. Today we're talking about five ways to get more musicians, and before we get into it, I just want to make sure that you know that we have a complete program called foundations. It's for training more musicians, and as we get into this episode talking about how to get more musicians, my personal experience has been the only way to get more and better musicians is by continual and intentional training, and that's what we offer online for your whole church and your community@worshipbandbuilder.com so make sure you visit that and then we're going to get right into this episode, right?
Speaker 2:We know that you don't have necessarily the time or the capability to train everybody that needs to be trained on every instrument on the stage. And that's what foundations is about is we have the right kind of training for each one of those positions and you can just send them to us and you can go kick your feet up and have a Coke.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Or I would say coffee latte and just say, Hey kid, when you can play those four chords, come back, go to this website, kid. Kid, what if it's a grownup? Okay, pops, go online, go online and learn this stuff. So first it takes time to build a strong team and it takes time to build musicians. So it takes work and training. And like I said in my little promo, which was so elegant, eloquent, which was so, um, I dunno, amazingly placed. I said it was intentional. So first let's do our list here. It's a pretty short list today. So first get better and get some exciting things happening.
Speaker 2:Okay? I don't really know what you mean by this. You mean this personally? You as the worship leader get better at your day
Speaker 1:craft or what? It, well, it's perfect that you don't know because then I can explain this is a concept. Let's say you've got this worship band and you're kind of stinky and you're kind of okay guitar and you just up there plunking around every Sunday. Do you think that everybody's going to be thinking, man, I wish I could get up there and be a part of that. I want to be a part of that. Maybe not everybody, some people, but my point here in my brain was as you get better, as you get exciting things happening on your stage and in your worship program, more people are going to be drawn into it. This episode, exciting.
Speaker 2:Like you invite a trumpeter to come one week or somebody playing bad pipes.
Speaker 1:Maybe have somebody on a unicycle. Yeah, I mean if you think, what do you mean like exciting, uh, exciting things. Like, okay, so for example, the, the exciting one exciting thing I used to do was I did it like a Wednesday night guitar class where I would just be like, anybody that wants to play coming Wednesday night, we're going to have like a little jam session. So create some interests. Yeah, it's exciting, crazy. Some different things, you know, like fog and light show and you know, making something spectacular happen. You just take whatever you think. I mean if you think a unicycle and a trumpeter is exciting, I think in trumpeter on a unicycle. Yeah. If you pull that noise out in church, you're going to have a sign up sheet in the lobby and it's going to be full. People are like, I want to get involved with that. I got it. I got some bagpipes. Like you said. I mean, whatever is going to be cool and exciting for your church. It's not going to be the same for everybody. Uh, my church that we were in that we build a lot of really strong teams and had success in training was just basically, Hey, we're going to do guitar nights. And anybody you want to bring your guitar and people were showing up like old guys, young kids, they're all showing up and then they were like becoming a part of the team and it was like excitement to get together and do something fun. Now I just want to be careful and say that every one I'm being silly, but trumpets and bagpipes are instruments that honor the Lord just like every other. And so I do not want to miss convey my feelings about any of those instruments. I am. I'm just goofing around. Yeah, that's funny cause I'm thinking if there is somebody who plays bagpipes who's listening, right? They're thinking like they're probably thinking, dude, I'm awesome and I know it because those are like awesome. They are so hard to play. They realize what it takes to play bagpipes. I don't think we could offend those guys. They're pretty much there. They know they're awesome. They show up man. Everybody's going to be like, okay everybody else put your answers down. The dudes got bagpipes. Well, and when I was in the band, the trumpeters were pretty much the most confident guys and girls on the field. So yeah, so you picked two musicians. Now if you would have said something like, you know bass players, you know those guys, those guys are easily offended, you know, cause they play the bass. No, I'm just kidding. There's so many bass jokes and so many bass memes out there and Facebook, I'm really, I feel sorry for bass players now we should start a bass player, support group, bass player support. If you play bass, it's okay. You are still cool. You know, you know what? The one thing I will say about a bass player and this, if you're a bass player, you've already heard this. If you always want to have a gig play bass. Honestly, without the bass, music is not danceable bass is what creates the dance ability of music, in my opinion. And if you are a bass player, you know you are in no shortage of gigs because there are just so many guitar players, but they're not that many bass players and you've always gone off the rails just a tad. Yeah. Well it's exciting. Do, do exciting
Speaker 2:stuff. Have a bass bass jam at night. All right, next one. Ask your friends. Okay. Ask your friends. So this is, we can go down this road for awhile. Ask your friends to start playing instruments.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Ask your friends to join the band. Ask your friends to come to band practice. Ask your friends if they play the music. I mean go number one. Here's the big thing. Just don't be, be friendly and that's on you.
Speaker 2:Be friendly. So when you're saying ask your friends, you might really be saying go make some friends who are interested in playing. Go make some friends basically. Yeah.
Speaker 1:Make some friends with people in your church. There are people in your church that play the guitar right now, the play, the bass that played the drums that you don't know because you're just not friendly enough. You haven't been out there.
Speaker 2:That was one thing that I made a note about was to ask around because there are closet musicians in your congregation. They have a guitar under the bed that they have not pulled out in years or they used to play piano when they were a kid or they sang in choir in high school and they can all be, um, a part of your team. Uh, if you make your needs known,
Speaker 1:yeah, you got it. If you want more musicians, you have to do everything we're talking about and then just be friendly and go out there and say, Hey, you know, uh, we need some more musicians. Anybody that and open it up and be open. That's why I like our foundations training because you can open it up like, Hey, we have new training if you're a bass player, because those people might play the bass. But they're like, well, yeah, but I'm not good enough to play for church. I mean musicians have all kinds of weird thoughts and some of them that are really good will would look up at church and be like, well I'm not, I'm not going to be good enough for their band or I'm not, they don't need a bass player. I mean they already have, you know, people make up weird stuff and so you need to be open and be friendly to them and ask people, Hey, do you play? A lot of the guys that I've got in my bands I've just been talking to, they're like, Oh, we used to play the bass and I'm like, really? Okay, you can be the bass player. Just start pulling people in, talking to people and being friendly and pulling them in.
Speaker 2:I think there are a lot of willing hearts too that have never played an instrument and if they just knew how quickly and easily they could really learn and become a part of the worship team that they would jump at the chance, make it accessible and that's just what I meant. Aspirins and be friendly. The next one is, and this is a little bit harder, I think evangelize. Is that how you spell evangelize anyway, Evy, I think that looks right. Evangelize and get some people saved. So you mean like go to a bar and grabs the live band and say, Hey, you want to come to church or how were you getting these guys?
Speaker 1:Yeah, just, I mean you're looking for musicians. You, you need a lot of these churches that we're talking to right now, small churches, they're like, well, we don't have anybody to play the guitar. Well, what about, you know Jenny's uncle, you know Brad who comes every three months? Maybe he's not a Christian. Maybe he just shows up during Christmas, but he plays in, yeah, he plays in a rock band. Why not go hit him up, talk to him, take him to lunch, evangelize.
Speaker 2:This is more about, this is more asking around and finding out. Maybe, maybe you don't, you're talking to a congregation member and maybe they don't play an instrument, but they know somebody who does. My thought on this was to go to your local schools and if you have a college or university around, um, band directors can tell you who's musical at school. Um, you know, certainly at a college there are plenty of music majors that may be available and just looking for a place to build their skills and hone their craft. Um, of course they might also be looking for a paycheck, but that usually doesn't have to be a big expense.
Speaker 1:And you can just tell him straight up, no dude, we ain't paying, you wait opinion. This is the church, this is God's work. You can say whatever you want to. But yeah, some musicians want to get paid, but a lot of musicians just want a place to play. It's coming from a musician. If somebody would have come to me and said, Hey, we've got a band that plays every Wednesday night and you can perform on Sunday. And they're like, Oh really? And I get to play. Yeah. And you get to play on this cool stage with this cool bass amp. And they'll be like, yeah, I want to do that. So you just got to work. The musicians brain, you know, evangelize them. Think like a musician and get musicians. But a lot of people look at it, in my opinion, they look at it like, well, we just don't have anybody. Well of course you don't have anybody. You got to start. Like I said, training. You got to get better. You got to start with some exciting stuff. You got to get friends, you got to bring people in, pull people in, and this can be anybody. If you're the pastor, if you're the worship leader, if you're the drummer, you can do this. You can bring a bass player. You can say, Hey, I got a guy at work that plays bass. You can evangelize your bass playing friend at work and bring him into your church. And you know, we're not going to talk too much about this, but sometimes people, they play in the bar, so maybe you want them to be saved before they get on the worship team or maybe not. That's for a whole nother webinar. But if you're reaching out to people and they're saying, why I'd love to come play at church and you're like, okay, great. And you know, they're playing at the bar on Friday night, you know, those are issues that your church and you are going to have to work out. But evangelize, evangelizing is not always easy and there's always going to be questions like, well this guy wants to play on the worship team, but he's also playing in this bar rock band on Friday night. Hey, if he wants to come to church, I'm thinking, yeah, let's get him into church. But then every worship team's going to be different. I, I've never, I have probably personally never done that. I've never had like a guy that's been playing in a bar band playing in my worship band. I have never, um, but I know people that have, so I think it's more of a heart issue for you to figure out, but it's all about evangelizing.
Speaker 2:I feel like, uh, the friendliness thing, you said be friendly and that is easier for some people than others. Um, so if you are not the outgoing sort, if you are a musician because you love music, but interacting with other people is challenging for you, then it may take the form of just making your needs known through the bulletin. Having an announcement made, um, a few weeks in a row on Sunday and just again, making your need known to your congregation. Um, you know, if if talking to people one on one makes you a little jittery, you can go about it this more, um, covert way
Speaker 1:and there are self help books for that. I mean, you're, you're the leader or one of the leaders and you're trying to build a team. So yeah, I mean if you're having those kinds of issues, like I don't want to talk to people. I'm with you. I don't like talking to people a lot. I, I don't like, you know, some things and you just have to get over some of that. But this, when you said put it on the bulletin, it's a perfect transition for my next point, which is open up training to your whole church. And this is a way that if you're kind of like feeling nervous about talking to people or let's say, and there are, there are valid reasons why you do that. You're, let's say you're a woman and you're not married and you're the worship leader, it's going to be awkward if you're out trying to find these guys to play drums with your band. So there are going to be, there are going to be times when it's not going to be so easy. Like I'm going to go get a bunch of guys to play with me in this band. You know, it could be awkward for different things. Or if you're a guy and you're trying to find backup singers and you know, there's a bunch of college girls there, you're not gonna you gotta be. So there are going to be times that you're just going to have to use like other people in your band, other things. Or if you're just really shy and can't talk to people, you're just going to have to get a self help book. Is that, is that bad? Get a self help book. We'll make a podcast on that. Are you, are you having those thoughts Emily, like you would have, you were scared to talk to people. You're not?
Speaker 2:No. No, but I know that you know, sometimes we relate more to our music as musicians than we do to.
Speaker 1:Some musicians are very client and they don't want to talk to people. I get that so you can put in your bulletin with foundations training, it's really cool because you can put in your bulletin, once you enroll in foundations, you can put in your bulletin, and this is Epic. Anybody who wants to do music, anybody who wants to join the band, you can enroll in worship band builder. It's right there and they can just go do it. Then they can kind of go along and do some training and maybe they'll come to you
Speaker 2:do it. You mean they can take lessons online at home?
Speaker 1:Exactly. I'm glad I have her here to cut to clarify all more of my rambling
Speaker 2:and they can come back to you knowing how to play their instrument. The other way that this, that our program works is you can do it as a group at church and especially if you are, um, if you have kind of been put in the worship leader position by default and you are still struggling and not feeling as confident as you'd like to with playing your instrument, you and a couple of other people on your team or new friends from church since you've been out there being friendly and, and getting to know people could uh, take these courses together.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it would be perfect for them to do that. So you don't have to be super, super friendly. You could use online tools, which brings us to the last point of this podcast, which I know you all love because that's all you ever do is play on social media.
Speaker 2:Oh, social media.
Speaker 1:Now I will just explore this together cause I'm not, I haven't thought this out too much social media for getting new people. So I really think, cause I'm an old guy kind of older, I'm an older guy, I think I'm a more distinguished guy. There's social media, I mean to find band members on social media I think would be hard, but it's more of that. I'm thinking I'll just go talk to people face to face. No who, who gets some friends. But social media is easy. Who know who, who know who's who. Just to know who's who. I was trying to be like that. That guy that, that dr Sue's guy trying to make a boy, you better stick to playing your guitar. I'm going to know who, who on my team. I'm going to know who I'm going to put it on social media. Hey guys, want to come play with this band that I'm putting together or Hey, check out this new live stream that I have. We're looking for bass players. I mean social media is pretty powerful. So if your whole band is using it and if your whole church is using it, you guys got to get using it. If you're not, but to get new people in your church, it'd be easy. You could put up a thing, Hey, we're doing a Wednesday night guitar night and he could put that on social media and you could bring people in there and nobody looks at that or responds to it. Well that's because they have a low low rates of interest on their social media feed. I don't know. That's what I would get. I lived it. I would put out the plea and I would get like two viewers. That's true. Well, you gotta be good at social media. That's why I thought we'll just talk this out. I mean, if you're not great at social media, find some young whippersnapper in your church, whippersnapper. Find some young whippersnapper in your church that a Wipper snacker. That's a snacker. That's me. Would it be snacking all day? Find some young kid in your church who's got a million followers on Twitter and say, Hey, would you tweet this out for us? That's, that's what I mean. I don't know if social media is going to be the most important part of building this, but I can see relevant ways for you to use this. If you have a thing to put up every week, here's what I'm going to give you a social media tip. Here's what I do know you, you and here, listen everybody, this is going to be the last tip, but this is going to be a killer tip. Okay? If this is going to be so good, stand the suspense. Yes. If you're, if you're okay. So if you're going to put up one feet, one social media thing, like, Hey, I'm going to have a band practice. Anybody want to come and play and nobody does it, that's fine. You'll think, Oh that didn't work. So here's my challenge. Put it up every day. Put up the same like everyday. Say it in different ways. Every day we're doing band, we're doing band, we're doing band. Just be really annoying on social media and that's how you do it. So you have to keep putting stuff out there so much. If you're in the older, a little bit older, you're thinking that's super annoying. But you know, that's the only way to break through that. There's a lot of noise there. So there's a breakthrough. Just keep telling everybody every day how good your band is and how cool your church is. And just keep kind of saying it over and over again. Because you know, all it takes is a few people that, you know, after a week or two they'll be like, Hey, well they keep talking about it. I might go check it out. See, it's just a matter of just keep throwing the net out there on social media. If you're going to use social media, do it, do it upright, do it, whatever you think it should be. Do it about 10 times more. And that's probably about enough. Okay. And that social media, build your band if you're really cool and if you're really, you know, young and you're cool and you're on social media, you know, put yourself out there playing and just put stuff out there and put your link to your church, your live stream, everything else like that.

Speaker 1:Okay. I don't, I'm not sure about that, but yeah, well that's because we just don't understand the Twitters, the Twitters, the Twitters and the Facebookers.
